Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar

Tens of thousands of people (22,000 is the current government estimate) have lost their lives due to Cyclone Nargis that swept through Burma Saturday. A US official has claimed that the death toll may eventually exceed 100,000. Below is a video report from Al Jazeera international:


The crisis has been rendered worse by the political situation in Myanmar in two ways -
  1. The military junta has been slow to respond and has delayed allowing humanitarian organizations into the country.
  2. As of Tuesday, the government planned to move forward, at least in a limited fashion, with a referendum on rewriting the constitution next Saturday.
CNN has an article linking to several blogs in the region reflecting on the crisis. Myat Thura , a Myanmar man currently in Thailand, has a few entries.
